The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Port Harcourt Zonal Command brought David Ikeaghichi before Justice S. D. Pam of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on March 14, 2024. Ikeaghichi faced charges of impersonating an Afghan soldier and fraudulently obtaining money, violating the Advance Fee Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.
He stands accused of two charges, as outlined in Section 1(1)(a & b) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the aforementioned Act. One charge states that Ikeaghichi, with intent to defraud, pretended to be a military personnel from Afghanistan on October 31, 2023, in Port Harcourt, and obtained $1000 worth of gift cards from a victim in Singapore named Dennis, falsely claiming it was for investment purposes.
Upon hearing the charges, Ikeaghichi pleaded “not guilty.” The prosecution counsel, K. Abdulsalam, requested a trial commencement date and for the defendant to be held in a Correctional Centre, while the defense counsel, Wilfred Ayerit, sought bail for the defendant.
Justice Pam ordered Ikeaghichi to be remanded in Port Harcourt Correctional Centre and scheduled the next hearing for April 24, 2024, to consider the bail application and start the trial.
The EFCC, in a statement, disclosed that Ikeaghichi’s fraudulent activities were uncovered through intelligence gathering in the Eneka/Elumbu areas of Port Harcourt. Investigations revealed his involvement in impersonation, investment, and dating scams. Notably, he posed as an Afghan military officer on Instagram to deceive one Denis from Singapore into giving him a $1000 gift card. Further probing revealed that Ikeaghichi converted the gift card into local currency through an online Chinese vendor.
