To enhance Nigeria’s development, Mr. Laurent Favier, the France Consul General in Lagos, emphasized the importance of Nigerians learning French. He highlighted that due to Nigeria’s proximity to Francophone countries, proficiency in French is crucial for securing business deals that could positively impact Nigeria’s growth.
Speaking during the International Day of La Francophonie in Lagos, Favier praised Nigerians for their increasing interest in the language. He noted that approximately 11,000 Nigerians enroll in French language courses annually, while around 15,000 teachers are actively teaching French across the country.
Favier emphasized the practicality of learning French, stating that it facilitates communication and business interactions with neighboring Francophone nations such as Togo and Cameroon. He stressed that without French proficiency, it would be challenging for Nigerians to fully participate in regional trade and development initiatives.
Addressing cross-cultural collaborations between Nigeria and France, Favier highlighted various programs initiated by the Consulate General in Lagos. These include artist residencies, scholarship programs for Nigerian students to study in France, and support for the Nigerian film industry through partnerships and cultural exchanges.
Furthermore, Favier mentioned the significant role played by the Alliance Française de Lagos, a cultural institution that has been actively promoting French language education and cultural exchanges in Nigeria for over 60 years.
In response to the partnership, Nigerian actor and filmmaker Kunle Afolayan appreciated the French support for the cultural scene in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of collaboration across linguistic and cultural barriers in fostering artistic growth and exchange.
The International Francophonie Day, celebrated on March 20th annually, underscores the significance of the French language and Francophone culture in member states of the International Organization of La Francophonie.
In related news, recent reports highlight French involvement in evacuation flights in Niger and a strike in Mali that resulted in civilian casualties, underscoring the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region.
