According to reports from the Baltimore City Fire Department relayed by CBS News, the catastrophe unfolded around 1:30 a.m. as emergency calls flooded in, detailing the impact of the vessel striking a crucial bridge column. Eyewitnesses described the chilling sight of vehicles, potentially with occupants inside, hurtling into the river below, their fate hanging in the balance amid the chaos.

As rescue efforts commenced in earnest, the scale of the disaster became increasingly apparent. Authorities indicated that numerous individuals, believed to be at least seven, were now submerged in the murky waters, prompting a swift and coordinated response from dive and rescue teams tasked with locating and extricating the victims from the perilous situation.

The department reported via its scanner an abundance of diesel fuel in the water surrounding the ship, noting the presence of construction workers on the bridge engaged in pouring concrete at the time.

A spokesperson for the Baltimore police informed CBS News of a “partial bridge collapse, with workers potentially in the water.”

According to the MidAtlantic Coast Guard, the 948-foot cargo ship Dali, flying the flag of Singapore, collided with the bridge while traveling from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Mayor Brandon M. Scott took to social media to address the situation, stating, “I’m aware of and en route to the incident at the Key Bridge. … Emergency personnel are on scene, and efforts are underway.”

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. also shared updates on social media, saying, “Rescue efforts are underway. Please keep those affected in your prayers.”

The Maryland Transportation Authority announced the closure of all lanes in both directions on I-695 Key Bridge due to the incident, later advising motorists of traffic diversions to I-95 and I-895.
