The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a vigilante named Adekunle Agunbiade, on allegations of setting a suspected thief ablaze in the Itire area of the state.
According to reports, the victim had been previously detained and handed over to the vigilante group for purportedly vandalizing a car parked on Shonde Street, Itire, with intentions of theft.
Confirming the incident, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the command, stated that they received a distress call around 5 am on Tuesday from a resident reporting the vandalism of their car by thieves. Subsequently, one of the alleged thieves was apprehended and delivered to the vigilante group led by Adekunle Ogunbiade.
However, the complainant was astonished to discover later that the suspected thief had been set on fire instead of being turned over to the police.
“The vigilante has been arrested, and investigations are underway,” added Hundeyin.
This development underscores the need for proper law enforcement procedures and vigilante oversight to prevent such extrajudicial actions.
