Kebbi State Residents Break In To Government Storehouse, Abscond With Palliative Rice....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Residents in Kebbi State, situated in northern Nigeria, took drastic actions on Saturday night, as they forcibly entered a government warehouse located in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, and made off with various food supplies, notably rice.
The incident unfolded in the Bayan Kara area, witnessing individuals overpowering security personnel and unlawfully accessing private premises to obtain essential food items.
This event in Kebbi State mirrors similar incidents witnessed in Abuja and Suleja, Niger State.
The looting is attributed to the challenging economic circumstances exacerbated by the removal of petrol subsidies and the devaluation of the naira.
Expressing his dismay over the situation, Muhammadu Gwadangwaji, Chairman of the Bayan Kara Market food vendors association, disclosed that following the looting of government-provided palliatives, the perpetrators further raided stores belonging to association members, making away with sacks of food items, the total worth of which remains unquantified.
Gwadangwaji lamented the ineffectiveness of armed policemen and soldiers in deterring the looters, who even responded with tear gas when confronted by law enforcement.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, clarified that the pilfered food items constituted a portion of those procured by the state government for distribution to the populace. He assured that steps had been taken to bolster security around warehouses to prevent future occurrences.
Idris further elaborated, “The hoodlums had previously targeted a consignment of food items brought to the state for distribution by Dangote before proceeding to loot the government warehouse. Such an incident is unprecedented in Kebbi. The looted food items were acquired by the state government for distribution among its people. The government has procured and distributed assorted grains worth over N5 billion across more than 200 trucks. It is regrettable that those who ransacked the warehouse chose to steal what was meant to alleviate the suffering of our citizens.
