The Women’s Leader of the Kaduna State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Maryam Suleiman, has been suspended by the party for her criticism of Governor Uba Sani regarding the substantial debt left by the previous administration. This move comes as Governor Sani’s spokesperson, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu, stated that the governor would not engage in responding to the recent criticism leveled against him by Bashir El-Rufai, the son of the immediate past governor.

In a notice dated March 31, 2024, the Kaduna APC cited alleged gross misconduct as the reason for Suleiman’s suspension. The notice, signed by Ali Maishago and Zakkah Bassahuwa, the Chairman and Secretary of the Badarawa/Malali ward respectively, accused Suleiman of actions aimed at tarnishing the governor’s reputation.

During a Town Hall Meeting held on Saturday, Governor Sani expressed concern over the significant debt burden inherited from his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai. He disclosed that the state was facing financial constraints, making it difficult to meet salary obligations.

According to Governor Sani, the previous administration left behind a debt of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities. Despite these challenges, he affirmed the commitment of his administration to steer Kaduna State towards progress and sustainable development.

The suspension of Maryam Suleiman, coupled with the governor’s acknowledgment of the state’s financial predicament, underscores the ongoing tensions within the Kaduna APC and the broader governance challenges facing the state.
