In an announcement made after an emergency State Executive Council meeting chaired by Deputy Governor Umar Abubakar-Tafida in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State Government has pledged a significant intervention for each of the intending pilgrims embarking on the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage.
The assurance was revealed by Yakubu Ahmed, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, during a press conference following the meeting. He disclosed that out of the over 3,000 intending pilgrims from the state, each would receive N1m in support from the government, with the remainder of the pilgrimage expenses, over N900,000, to be covered by the pilgrims themselves.
With the recent adjustment in the exchange rate, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria had informed that pilgrims registered for the 2024 Hajj before the previous deadline would now need to pay a balance of N1.9m.
Ahmed expressed contentment with the government’s gesture and urged prospective pilgrims to fulfill the remaining payment to partake in the Hajj pilgrimage.
He stated, “The Kebbi Government has offset N1m for each pilgrim out of about N2m requested by NAHCON as additional fares, while the remaining balance should be paid by individual pilgrims to complete payment. Pilgrims who completed payment of the fares would also enjoy the N1m magnanimity from the government.”
The Commissioner also mentioned the commendation received by the state government from a committee of the Federal Ministry of Aviation regarding the facilities at the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Birnin Kebbi. He assured that the airport is fully equipped for the airlift of pilgrims during the 2024 Hajj exercise.
Additionally, Shehu Mu’azu, the Commissioner for Agriculture, highlighted that a 13-man committee had been established by the state government to investigate a recent crisis involving the attack on some foodstuff warehouses by hoodlums. He reassured the people of the state that none of the state government’s storage facilities was affected and commended the security agencies for swiftly bringing the situation under control.
