Government Initiatives Launched To Combat Increasing Foodstuff Prices
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has declared its determination to address the surge in prices of goods and services, despite the recent strengthening of the Naira against the dollar. The Commission has emphasized its resolve not to tolerate any form of exploitation of Nigerians.
In a statement released to the press and endorsed by Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, the Acting Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, the FCCPC has instructed its operatives to heighten surveillance across both formal and informal markets to identify businesses involved in unjustifiable price hikes.
The statement asserts, “The Commission has instructed its operatives to increase surveillance across formal and informal markets, where businesses might be exploiting market conditions to unfairly inflate prices, and to bolster enforcement efforts.”
“The operatives will collaborate with trade associations, farmer groups, and other stakeholders to pinpoint and eliminate unnecessary barriers to entry across various sectors, combat price manipulation, and dismantle cartels. This initiative aims to stimulate heightened competition, ultimately resulting in reduced prices for consumers.”
“The Commission remains dedicated to enlightening consumers about their rights and enabling them to make informed decisions. We will undertake advocacy and public awareness campaigns to shed light on price manipulation and other unfair trade practices, as well as offer guidance on identifying and reporting such practices.”
“FCCPC acknowledges the significance of collaborating with other government agencies to address this multifaceted issue. We will cooperate with relevant regulatory bodies to formulate a comprehensive and synchronized response to anti-competitive practices, price manipulation, and other consumer protection concerns.
