In a gathering that marked a pivotal moment for the Niger Delta’s economic trajectory, the Honorable Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, unveiled ambitious strategies at the 6th Meeting of the National Council on Niger Delta in Asaba, Delta State.
The meeting, themed “Stimulating Strategies for Economic Growth and Development in the Niger Delta Region,” brought together a diverse array of stakeholders dedicated to charting a course towards prosperity.
Minister Momoh began by expressing profound appreciation to the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Chief) Sheriff Oborevwori, for hosting the event. He also acknowledged the dedication of other governors and representatives present, recognizing their collective efforts for the region’s advancement.
The Minister’s address centered on the alignment of the Council’s agenda with the Eight Presidential Priorities of the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These priorities, focusing on economic reform, peace, and infrastructure development, are integral to the “Renewed Hope Agenda” aimed at transforming the region.
“I implore your patience and support as we embark on this historic national task,” Minister Momoh urged, emphasizing the commitment of all Ministers and Permanent Secretaries to these priorities.
Outlining the Ministry’s mandates, the Minister detailed strategic objectives, including promoting peace and security, managing infrastructural projects, empowering youth and women, and accelerating environmental cleanup efforts. He also highlighted collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to implement the Host Community Trust Fund under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
During his address, Minister Momoh addressed critical challenges, notably the state of the East-West Road, a crucial economic lifeline in the region. He assured stakeholders of ongoing efforts, including collaboration with the Ministry of Works, to enhance the road’s condition and facilitate economic activities.
“We are bolstering our coordination mechanism to realize our planned objectives in the Niger Delta Region,” Minister Momoh declared, stressing the importance of shared purpose and transparency among stakeholders.
The Minister’s impactful speech resonated deeply with attendees, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, the Minister of Steel Development.
President Tinubu’s recognition of the Minister’s role in the Niger Delta’s progress underscored the administration’s unwavering commitment to the region’s development. He outlined a comprehensive plan focusing on education, infrastructure, and economic challenges, highlighting the ministry’s renaming to “Niger Delta Development Ministry” to signify this core mandate.
Additionally, the President detailed plans to revitalize the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and expedite projects such as the East-West Road and refinery operations across the region.
In a gesture of gratitude, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State thanked President Tinubu for appointing Minister Momoh, recognizing his visionary leadership in managing the ministry’s affairs.
