The Honorable Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, recently delivered a compelling address at the 6th Meeting of the National Council on Niger Delta in Asaba, Delta State. The meeting, a pivotal gathering of stakeholders, aimed to chart a course towards economic growth and development in the region.
In his remarks, Minister Momoh expressed sincere appreciation to the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Chief) Sheriff Oborevwori, for graciously hosting the event. He commended the Governor’s unwavering dedication to the development of the Niger Delta Region, a sentiment echoed towards other governors and representatives present.
The theme of this year’s meeting, “Stimulating Strategies for Economic Growth and Development in the Niger Delta Region,” set the tone for discussions focused on multi-disciplinary approaches to tackle challenges and introduce innovative initiatives.
Minister Momoh highlighted the alignment of the Council’s agenda with the Eight Presidential Priorities of the present administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These priorities, including economic reform, peace and prosperity, and infrastructure development, are central to the “Renewed Hope Agenda” aimed at transforming the region.
“I solicit your patience and support to enable us to achieve this enormous and historic national task,” Minister Momoh urged, emphasizing the commitment of all Ministers and Permanent Secretaries to these priorities.
Enumerating the Ministry’s mandates, Minister Momoh detailed strategic objectives, including promoting peace and security, managing infrastructural projects, empowering youth and women, and accelerating environmental cleanup efforts. He also highlighted collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to implement the Host Community Trust Fund under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
During his address, the Minister addressed critical issues such as the deplorable condition of the East-West Road, a vital artery for economic activities in the region. He assured stakeholders of ongoing efforts, including collaboration with the Ministry of Works, to improve the road’s condition and facilitate economic growth.
“We are reinforcing our coordination mechanism to deliver planned objectives in the Niger Delta Region,” Minister Momoh declared, emphasizing the need for shared purpose and transparency among stakeholders.
The Minister’s speech resonated with attendees, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, the Minister of Steel Development.
The President highlighted that his administration is acutely aware of the region’s challenges, particularly underdevelopment and security issues. He emphasized the administration’s concerted efforts towards restructuring the region. Central to this commitment is the development of a comprehensive plan focusing on education, infrastructure, and various economic challenges in the area.
The President emphasized that this commitment to development is reflected in the renaming of the ministry from “Niger Delta Affairs” to “Niger Delta Development Ministry.” He stressed that this change signifies the core mandate of the ministry, which is to drive holistic development in the region.
Furthermore, the President mentioned that his administration has formulated a detailed plan for the region’s advancement. Notably, he highlighted efforts to revitalize and reinvigorate the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for optimal development outcomes. The President assured citizens of plans to swiftly complete the East-West Road project and emphasized the commitment to ensure all refineries across the region are operational. These endeavors, he stated, are targeted for completion within his first term.
Addressing the critical issue of environmental degradation, the President also discussed strategies to mitigate these challenges in the region.The president praised Minister Momoh’s efforts, acknowledging his role in advancing the prosperity of the Niger Delta.
The Minister’s address marked a pivotal moment in the quest for economic growth and development in the Niger Delta Region. As stakeholders engage in fruitful deliberations, the collective commitment to transforming the region into an industrial hub remains steadfast.
