The Nigeria Correctional Service has responded to the breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, where 119 inmates managed to escape. The incident, triggered by heavy rainfall, inflicted significant damage on the facility, as reported earlier by Naija News.
Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), confirmed the escape in a statement released Thursday morning. He explained that the prolonged downpour weakened the structural integrity of the facility, causing parts of the custodial center’s walls to collapse, thereby enabling the inmates to flee.
Duza stated, “A heavy downpour that lasted for several hours on the night of Wednesday, April 24, 2024, wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Suleja, Niger State, and surrounding buildings, destroying part of the custodial facility, including its perimeter fence, resulting in the escape of a total of 118 inmates.”
He further mentioned that the NCoS promptly activated its recapturing protocols, collaborating with other security agencies. As a result, they have successfully recaptured 10 of the fleeing inmates and are actively pursuing the others.
Acknowledging the aging infrastructure of many correctional facilities, Duza assured the public of ongoing efforts to replace outdated structures with modern ones. He highlighted ongoing construction projects for six 3000-capacity ultra-modern custodial centers across Nigeria, alongside the renovation of existing facilities.
Duza concluded by urging the public not to be alarmed and to carry on with their daily activities. He encouraged vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious movements to the nearest security agency.
The statement reassured the public of the authorities’ vigilance and commitment to restoring order while affirming their responsibility to maintain safety and security in the community.
