The House of Representatives has announced its intention to investigate a Chinese supermarket in Abuja following allegations of discrimination against Nigerian shoppers. In a joint statement released by Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group, and the spokesperson for the House, Hon. Akin Rotimi Jnr., the committee expressed deep concern over the reported mistreatment of Nigerians at the supermarket.

The committee urged Nigerians to remain calm and assured them that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the matter. It emphasized the importance of the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the Republic of China, emphasizing the principles of friendship and cooperation that both nations have fostered over the years.

Highlighting the significance of mutual respect and understanding between countries, the statement condemned any form of discrimination or prejudice. It underscored the positive bilateral relations between Nigeria and China, which have been bolstered by various collaborations in infrastructure, trade, education, and healthcare.

The ongoing partnership between the two countries has resulted in the completion of significant projects and continues to benefit both nations. Additionally, initiatives by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, such as socio-cultural exchanges and scholarships for Nigerian students, have further strengthened mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of Nigeria and China.

The statement also referenced recent social media outrage over the alleged discrimination at the Chinese supermarket, which prompted the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC) to intervene by shutting down the supermarket and summoning its owner for questioning. Despite the allegations, the owner of the supermarket has denied any discriminatory practices.

The House of Representatives’ probe underscores the government’s commitment to upholding the rights of all Nigerians and ensuring fair treatment in commercial establishments.
