Warning Signs: Why Disengaging Staff Could Hurt Your Business....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The recent wave of layoffs at the Lagos State Water Corporation (LWC) has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly impacting the 405 employees who suddenly found themselves unemployed. These individuals, many of whom dedicated decades of service to the corporation, possess valuable institutional knowledge crucial for achieving the corporation’s mission of providing safe water to Lagosians, a goal yet to be fully realized.
The abruptness of these layoffs raises concerns about potential negative repercussions, including heightened stress among citizens and even cases of suicide, as families grapple with sudden financial strain. Additionally, the lack of due process in these actions reflects poorly on the government’s commitment to fair employment practices.
Prior to this round of layoffs, the termination of approximately 450 contract workers in November 2023 further underscored the instability within the corporation. With reports indicating that the corporation was already operating with a skeletal staff, questions arise about the rationale behind these mass terminations, especially considering the understaffing issues already plaguing waterworks across the state.
Despite the pressing need for adequate water supply in Lagos, the current installed water production capacity falls far short of the daily demand. While the restructuring efforts led by the new management under Engr. Tijani Muktar may aim to improve efficiency, placing blame solely on the workers overlooks systemic issues, including political interference, that have hampered the corporation’s effectiveness.
The legitimate grievances expressed by affected employees must be addressed through proper legal channels. Section 20 of the Labour Law outlines procedures for handling redundancy, emphasizing the importance of notifying unions or workers’ representatives and providing justification for terminations. Failure to adhere to these guidelines not only undermines employee rights but also risks creating a culture of impunity within the public service.
Ultimately, resolving these issues in accordance with the law is essential for maintaining the integrity of the workforce and advancing the corporation’s goals without unnecessary legal obstacles.
