Bello has been entangled in a dispute with the EFCC, resulting in the agency declaring him wanted subsequent to his failure to appear for arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the EFCC had filed N80.2 billion fraud charges against him. The Nigerian Immigration Service also placed Bello on a watchlist, directing authorities to apprehend him wherever he might be located. Currently, Bello’s whereabouts remain undisclosed.
Speaking at a thanksgiving service organized by his aides to commemorate his 63rd birthday at a Redeemed Christian Church of God in Makurdi, Benue State, Ortom advised Bello to end his concealment. Ortom emphasized that Bello’s continued evasion would tarnish the reputation of former governors nationwide. He urged Bello to face the allegations without resistance, emphasizing that the EFCC officials are bound by the law in their inquiries. Despite attempts to reach out to Bello directly or through his associates, Ortom expressed his inability to establish contact, using the platform of the press to convey his message.
Following his departure from office in May 2023, the EFCC summoned Ortom, who complied and visited the agency’s Makurdi office in June 2023. After questioning by EFCC investigators, Ortom was allowed to leave.
Expressing gratitude to the people of Benue State for their unwavering support throughout his eight-year tenure and for commemorating his birthday, Ortom described his two terms in office as challenging. He called upon citizens to continually pray for their leaders and acknowledged God’s blessings upon his life and family. Ortom asserted that his tenure left him spiritually enriched, urging youths to refrain from disparaging elders on social media and instead utilize the platform to foster personal growth and contribute to the state’s development.
