Fuel Subsidy Removal Key To Nigeria’s Financial Survival, Tinubu Reports

President Bola Tinubu asserted on Sunday that Nigeria narrowly escaped bankruptcy due to his administration’s decision to halt fuel subsidy payments. However, the subsidy removal led to currency instability and increased food prices, exacerbating hardships for Nigerians. Tinubu defended his decision at the WEF, stating it was crucial “to prevent the country from going bankrupt” and to “reorient the economy towards growth.” Despite the challenges, Tinubu highlighted parallel measures implemented to alleviate the impact on vulnerable citizens.

Tinubu justified the unification of the naira exchange rates as necessary to eliminate artificial currency value and foster competitiveness. He stressed the importance of stability and economic prosperity in West Africa, emphasizing the need for regional collaboration and inclusiveness to achieve growth.

Addressing poverty and instability in Africa’s Sahel region, Tinubu urged global attention to root causes and called for increased capital infusion and resource exploitation. He highlighted his efforts as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government to discourage unconstitutional regime changes and promote trade.

Tinubu called for inclusive programs driving economic opportunity, emphasizing global collaboration for capital formation and economic development.
