In a statement attributed to Emmanuel Njoku, the Head of Press of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), it was announced that the increases will be effective from January 1, 2024. The salary structures encompassed by this decision include the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).

Reacting to this development during an interaction with ThisDay on Tuesday, NLC spokesperson Comrade Benson Upah emphasized the necessity of extending this gesture to all categories of Civil Servants. While acknowledging that the NLC has yet to formally receive the government’s statement detailing the pay rise, Upah highlighted that the increment appeared to be targeted at specific segments of the public service.

Expressing approval for the salary hike, Upah urged the government to ensure that the increment adequately addresses the prevailing economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers. He stressed the importance of inclusivity, advocating for extending the benefit to lower cadre Civil Servants who are equally deserving.

Furthermore, the labour leader underscored the pressing need for improvements in essential services such as transportation, education, and healthcare, which have become increasingly unaffordable for Nigerian workers. He articulated the collective aspiration of workers for a better quality of life, underscored by improved infrastructure, reliable electricity, and enhanced remuneration.

In essence, the NLC welcomes the salary increment while calling for its equitable distribution across all strata of Civil Servants and emphasizing the imperative of addressing broader socio-economic challenges facing Nigerian workers.
