The United Kingdom (UK) has unveiled its “Digital Development Strategy” White Paper on International Development, with a goal to equip over one million Nigerians with digital skills within the next two to three years. Highlighting Nigeria’s significance as its primary market, the UK High Commission outlined its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda during a workshop with technology journalists at the Deputy High Commissioner’s residence in Lagos.

With a legacy of 80 years in Nigeria, the Commission emphasized its responsibility to share the technologies contributing to its leadership in Europe and global technology ranking. Last year alone, Nigeria and the UK engaged in business transactions worth seven billion pounds, underscoring the country’s importance to the UK’s development agenda.

Idongesit Udoh, UK’s Digital Access Programme Adviser & Country Lead, explained that the UK plans to implement the principles of its DDS white paper to yield digital dividends in Nigeria over the next few years. The DDS aims to address digital transformation, inclusion, responsibility, and sustainability through initiatives like Last-mile Connectivity to ensure remote areas benefit from digital technologies and Digital Public Infrastructure for society-wide digital services like e-government.

Furthermore, the UK aims to leverage artificial intelligence for rapid evolution while mitigating associated risks, such as leaving countries behind due to weak digital foundations. Efforts will also be made to bridge the gender digital divide, empowering women and girls to benefit from digital development.

The UK Government officially launched the Digital Development Strategy (DDS) on March 18th, 2024. This strategy outlines plans to collaborate with partner countries like Nigeria for an inclusive, responsible, and sustainable digital future, supporting digital transformation and managing emerging risks over the next seven years.
