NIMC Exposes Massive Scam: Nigerians Registered With Fake NINs....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) made a significant announcement on Friday, revealing its successful efforts in dismantling a syndicate responsible for distributing fake National Identity Numbers (NINs) to unsuspecting Nigerians. During a press briefing held in Abuja, NIMC Director General Abisoye Coker-Odusote disclosed that several individuals involved in this fraudulent activity have been apprehended and are currently undergoing legal proceedings.

The syndicate came under scrutiny following a complaint from a victim who reported paying N120,000 for the modification of her birth certificate, a service falsely offered by individuals posing as NIMC personnel.

Coker-Odusote stressed the seriousness of the situation, stating that such data doesn’t reach the NIMC server, resulting in numerous Nigerians falling victim to scams.

As of May 2024, the NIN database has enrolled over 107.34 million Nigerians, a substantial increase from December 2023’s 104 million registrations. The NIN has become integral for bolstering security, governance, and efficient service delivery across various government platforms.

The DG provided insight into the syndicate’s modus operandi, describing how they posed as legitimate vendors or cyber café operators, utilizing links, software, and fake NIN generation to deceive unsuspecting individuals.

The sophistication of their operation meant that the fake data circumvented detection by the official NIMC servers.

Further investigations identified additional suspects operating near NIMC’s annex office. While the exact number of individuals under investigation remains undisclosed, the NIMC assured that all perpetrators would face cybercrime-related charges upon the conclusion of the inquiry.

Coker-Odusote expressed frustration with the ongoing extortion and data breaches, emphasizing the emotional and financial toll on victims. In one case, a victim was defrauded of over N120,000 under the pretense of adjusting official documents, underscoring the severity of the scam operations.
