The House of Representatives has accused cryptocurrency giant Binance of resorting to blackmail in an attempt to divert attention from serious allegations of financial and economic crimes brought against it by the Nigerian government.
During a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Hon. Ginger Obinna Onwusibe, Chairman of the House Committee on Financial Crimes, refuted Binance’s claims that committee members had solicited bribes from the company to settle the allegations against it.
Onwusibe denounced the allegations as baseless blackmail aimed at deflecting scrutiny from the accusations leveled against Binance. He emphasized the gravity of the allegations against the company, asserting that they were intended to obstruct the committee’s investigation into Binance’s activities in Nigeria.
Highlighting the alleged criminal activities of Binance, Onwusibe pointed to incidents such as the escape of Binance employee Mr. Nadeem Anjarwalla from custody, using a forged passport, and referenced ongoing investigations by Nigerian security and regulatory agencies.
He also referenced a recent case in the United States where Binance founder Mr. Changpeng Zhao was sentenced to four months in prison for money laundering and other violations, indicating a pattern of disregard for regulations.
Onwusibe assured the public of the committee’s commitment to integrity and transparency, vowing not to be swayed by Binance’s attempts to undermine their efforts. He stated that the committee would continue its investigations undeterred, despite Binance’s efforts to distract from the allegations against it.
Regarding Binance’s allegations of bribery, Onwusibe clarified that a pre-hearing meeting had taken place to discuss issues that would be addressed in a scheduled public hearing. He insisted that no demands or solicitations for bribes were made during this meeting, refuting Binance’s claims.
In response to Binance’s allegations, Onwusibe emphasized that the committee would only engage in settlement negotiations under transparent and official conditions, dismissing Binance’s purported demands for secrecy and cryptocurrency payments.
Overall, the House of Representatives remains resolute in its pursuit of justice and accountability, determined to address the serious allegations against Binance despite attempts to derail their efforts through blackmail.
