Amid internal strife within the Labour Party, the National Working Committee (NWC) has officially declared the suspension of its National Chairman, Julius Abure, by the Edo State chapter as unauthorized and against the party’s constitution.
The dispute escalated following Abure’s suspension by his local ward in Esan North-East Local Government, Edo State, over allegations of highhandedness and anti-party activities. This decision, made through a letter dated May 14, 2024, and ratified on May 15, 2024, was reportedly endorsed by the state executive committee, led by Kelly Ogbaloi, during a meeting in Benin.
In response, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, issued a statement in Abuja, asserting that the actions taken by the Edo State chapter lacked the requisite authority. He cited Article 17 Subsection 1 of the party’s 2019 revised constitution, which mandates that only a national convention convened for this purpose, and achieving a two-thirds majority, can suspend or remove the national chairman.
Ifoh further referenced previous court rulings, including those from the Edo High Court and the Appeal Court, supporting the constitutional framework, and emphasized the NWC’s advice to Abure to disregard the suspension and continue his duties. He labeled the attempt to undermine Abure’s position as futile and linked it to previous hostilities witnessed during the governorship primaries.
The statement underscores the NWC’s firm stance against the actions of the Edo State chapter and reaffirms its support for Abure’s leadership
