Kano Police Commissioner Denies Receiving Arrest Directive for Deposed Emir……….CONTINUE READING

Kano State’s Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, refuted claims of receiving any mandate from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to apprehend the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero. Gumel clarified this stance during a press interaction following a meeting held at the Command Headquarters, attended by the Nigerian Army Brigade Commander and representatives from other security agencies.

Governor Yusuf had earlier issued a statement through his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, instructing the immediate arrest of Ado Bayero, accusing him of inciting public unrest and jeopardizing the state’s peace upon his attempted return to Kano.

However, Commissioner Gumel asserted that they hadn’t officially received the governor’s directive regarding the arrest of the former Emir. He emphasized the police force’s commitment to uphold court orders and collaborate with military and other security entities to ensure law adherence.

Recent legal developments have seen a Federal High Court in Kano issuing an order halting the enforcement of the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Law, following an application by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano Emirate.

The dissolution of the four newly created emirate councils by the Kano State House of Assembly and Governor Yusuf’s reinstatement of Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano had stirred controversy, leading to legal challenges and a call for maintaining the status quo until the fundamental rights case is heard.
