The incident unfolded on Tuesday morning at the Obiri-Ikwerre area of Obio/Akpor LGA, where a truck transporting gas cylinders overturned, igniting into flames.

Reports indicate that the fire originated from three of the cylinders, causing panic and exacerbating the inferno, which was mistaken for dynamite or strong explosives by residents of Rumuosi and Ozuoba in the LGA.

The tanker, purportedly carrying numerous liquefied natural gas (LNG) cylinders, overturned and exploded while maneuvering around the roundabout at the interchange along the East-West Road.

Witnesses stated that the explosion engulfed a salon car with a passenger inside, resulting in multiple burn injuries and the tragic demise of three individuals.

Firefighters swiftly responded to the scene, extinguishing the blaze and cordoning off the affected road section with the assistance of police and other agencies to redirect traffic.

Although the truck driver narrowly escaped harm, fleeing moments before the explosion, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police and the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, confirmed the death toll of three individuals in the incident.
