Last Wednesday, a certificate belonging to an engineering graduate of the institution, Abisoye Azeez Oluwaseun, surfaced on the internet after a man expressed interest in contacting the owner upon receiving it with his suya purchase.

The certificate indicates that Abisoye Azeez Oluwaseun graduated with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in Chemical and Polymer Engineering from LASU.

However, LASU’s management clarified in a statement issued on Tuesday that the certificate has been deemed invalid due to an incorrect spelling of the bearer’s surname.

According to the management, the viral certificate is authentic but was invalidated on February 25, 2013, as the graduate’s surname was inaccurately stated as “ABISOYE” instead of “ABIOYE.”

The university confirmed that a new certificate with the correct surname was issued to the graduate on September 30, 2014.

As per the institution’s protocol, the invalidated certificate should have been securely disposed of after reissuance. However, it was inadvertently included in public waste, leading to its exposure.

In their statement, LASU remarked, “The University, having retrieved the certificate on November 21, 2018, would like to clarify the following: The certificate in question is genuine but was invalidated on February 25, 2013, due to an incorrect surname being recorded as ABISOYE instead of ABIOYE.”

“The presence of the invalidated certificate in the public domain resulted from inadequate screening of office waste prior to disposal.”
