Engineer David Umahi, the Minister of Works, revealed that he had been informed of the destruction of the expansion joints crucial for absorbing the thermal expansions of the Bridge. Despite the deployment of a private security outfit by the Federal Ministry of Works to monitor the area, reports of vandalism persist, much to Umahi’s dismay.
In a statement released by the minister’s Special Adviser (Media), Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, in Abuja, Umahi strongly condemned the ruthless destruction of the expansion joints as a deliberate act of sabotage against a vital national infrastructure with significant socio-economic benefits for the adjacent states and the entire nation.
Umahi expressed sorrow that individuals would resort to damaging such a critical and strategic asset that plays a pivotal role in Nigeria’s socio-economic progress.
Highlighting the importance of the 2nd Niger Bridge, which was handed over to the Renewed Hope administration on 12th December 2023 upon completion, Umahi emphasized its role as one of the PIDF projects aimed at addressing the region’s road infrastructure needs, enhancing economic activities, promoting tourism and trade opportunities, and enhancing road safety along the corridor.
However, he lamented that despite these noble intentions, the facilities are being targeted by vandals who should be benefiting from its services.
Umahi expressed gratitude to the public, especially the vigilant young Nigerians who raised awareness about the issue on various media platforms. He assured the public that a more robust security framework is being put in place to prevent further damage to the facilities. Additionally, a technical team has been tasked with assessing and repairing the damaged parts of the superstructure.
He called on all road users, residents, and authorities within the vicinity of the 2nd Niger Bridge and its associated infrastructure to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or attempts at vandalism to the nearest police station.
Furthermore, the ministry pledged generous rewards for anyone or group that aids in the arrest or provides useful information about the identity of the perpetrators of vandalism on the 2nd Niger Bridge or any other road infrastructure nationwide.
The federal government appealed to states and communities hosting such projects to take ownership and contribute to their protection
