Zoning, Moro noted, was at the heart of the internal crisis that continues to plague the opposition party, fueling discontent among key figures like former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who worked against the PDP during the general elections.

At the time, the PDP had thrown its presidential ticket open to aspirants from all regions, a decision that paved the way for Atiku, a northerner, to emerge as the party’s standard-bearer.

Speaking on Arise News on Monday, Moro explained that the party deliberately chose to allow northern aspirants, insisting Atiku was considered the “best option available” for the PDP going into the election.

“The PDP decided to put its best foot forward in 2023, regardless of where the candidate came from. That is why Atiku was nominated in 2023, and it backfired,” Moro admitted.

However, following its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday, the PDP resolved to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South, effectively shutting out other regions from contesting the primaries in 2026.
