Nine more of the abducted female students from the Federal University in Gusau, Zamfara State, have been liberated, marking a significant breakthrough in the aftermath of the harrowing events that unfolded on September 22, 2023. During this distressing incident, assailants, believed to be terrorists, conducted a raid on the off-campus hostels near Sabon Gidan Community, resulting in the abduction of a total of twenty-four female students. Among those taken were also three male labourers affiliated with GUPRAN Engineering Services Ltd.
The swift response of the Nigerian Army resulted in the rescue of 13 victims and the aforementioned labourers within a span of fewer than 72 hours following the abduction. Jacob Hassan, the father of Naomi, one of the students who remains in captivity, confirmed the recent development during a conversation with AIT News.
Reports indicate that the freed students have been transported to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where they are currently undergoing medical treatment at a discreet medical facility. Notably, it is reported that the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, played a direct role in the negotiation process that led to their release.
In what serves as a beacon of hope amidst adversity, some of the liberated students have managed to communicate with their families, offering a semblance of solace and relief. Family members of Nasira and Zainab, two of the rescued students, have corroborated this positive turn of events.
