Retired army generals and civil society organizations have strongly condemned the killings, urging swift apprehension and prosecution of the culprits to deter future criminal activities.

The tragic incident occurred amidst a longstanding communal land dispute between Okoloba and Okuama communities. The tension escalated after youths from Okoloba allegedly ambushed and killed three Okuama youths in January 2024. Subsequent retaliatory actions exacerbated the conflict, leading to the recent ambush on the army personnel.

During the military operation to rescue a hostage in Okuama, clashes broke out between the youths and soldiers, resulting in casualties on both sides. The soldiers managed to evacuate wounded personnel for medical treatment.
