Abubakar, who played a crucial role in Nigeria’s transition to democracy, highlighted the circumstances that pave the way for military interventions in politics. “When there is a lack of equity and justice in government, it inevitably breeds problems,” he asserted, citing internal strife within political parties and a deficit of democratic principles as primary instigators.
The former leader’s remarks follow the military coup in Niger last year, which resulted in the removal of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum. Abdulsalami was actively engaged in negotiations on behalf of ECOWAS, which initially imposed sanctions on Niger following the coup. However, as ECOWAS adjusted its stance, Niger had already forged alliances with other countries that had undergone similar governmental upheavals
