In a press statement released on Sunday, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, underscored the toxicity of dichlorvos to human health, noting its potentially fatal consequences. Adeyeye emphasized that the sale of small volume dichlorvos (100 ml or less), marketed as Sniper, has been prohibited since 2019, while the sale of larger volumes (one litre) is restricted to certified agrochemical outlets.

Responding to a viral video depicting individuals using dangerous chemicals to preserve food items like beans, stockfish, and crayfish, Adeyeye urged traders and merchants to refrain from using unauthorized chemicals on food intended for human consumption. She outlined the significant risks posed by the misuse of dichlorvos, which can lead to both short-term and long-term health consequences, including developmental abnormalities, memory loss, reduced fertility, and potential carcinogenic effects.

Adeyeye advocated for alternative methods of food preservation, highlighting the use of bio-pesticides as a safer option compared to dichlorvos. She cautioned that the absence of spoilage in food over an extended period might indicate pesticide contamination rather than freshness, unless stored in refrigeration.

Furthermore, Adeyeye disclosed that NAFDAC has implemented various initiatives, such as stakeholders’ sensitization meetings and thorough laboratory testing, to ensure compliance with safety guidelines and to prevent pesticide residues from exceeding maximum limits for both domestic consumption and exports. Routine monitoring of stakeholders is also conducted to ensure adherence to regulations.

Adeyeye reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to global best practices, including the phase-out of certain pesticides banned in other countries due to their proven toxicity
