In a statement released on Monday, Ikwechegh acknowledged that his actions did not align with the standards expected of a public official. He expressed regret for the harm and embarrassment caused to the driver, Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the broader public.

“I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people,” he stated. “My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.”

Ikwechegh confirmed his full cooperation with the Nigerian Police and pledged to support their investigation into the incident. He described the unacceptable behaviour displayed in a viral video, where he was seen verbally and physically confronting the driver, as unbecoming of a public servant.

“I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation,” he added. He also expressed appreciation for the swift condemnation of his actions by his party and the police, highlighting a collective commitment to uphold the law.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, Ikwechegh announced he is seeking professional counselling and will engage in community service initiatives aimed at promoting respect and understanding. He urged all Nigerians to work together to foster a culture of dignity and respect.

The incident, which occurred at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, has sparked significant public backlash. In the viral video, the driver recorded Ikwechegh’s aggressive behaviour, including threats to harm him. Following the altercation, Ikwechegh was summoned by police for questioning.
