Abia PDP Candidate Claims Life In Peril Amid Election Dispute, Calls For Urgent Probe

In a statement to the press, Akwu reported that his residence was attacked by armed individuals early on election day, resulting in injuries to his cousins and polling agents. He called for justice, urging authorities to investigate and provide him with protection.

Akwu also publicly challenged the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, demanding clarification on the Deputy Governor’s alleged involvement in the incident. However, Emetu, through his Chief Press Secretary, dismissed Akwu’s claims as attention-seeking and unfounded.

In response, Akwu reiterated his concerns, stating, “I am a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record; I wonder why my life is being threatened.” He urged relevant authorities to investigate and ensure his safety, adding that his life and freedom are at risk due to alleged intimidation.

The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) has since refuted Akwu’s claims, stating that he must provide evidence to substantiate his allegations. Dr. Kelechi Okere, ABSIEC’s Commissioner for Information, Voter Education, Training, and Publicity, asserted that “an election, not a selection” took place, and evidence is needed to validate any claims of victory.

Additionally, the Police Investigation Officer (IPO) in charge noted that four individuals were detained in connection with the incident but later released. The Deputy Governor allegedly filed a complaint, citing defamation on social media.

Akwu remains steadfast, calling on his followers to stay calm while pressing for a thorough investigation into his safety concerns and the election’s outcome.
