Abia State government has announced plans to gradually settle the N16.5 billion salary arrears owed to staff of state-owned higher institutions by the previous administration. Akpara clarified that the current administration inherited significant debts, particularly affecting institutions like Abia State University, ABSU, and others, where months of salaries had gone unpaid due to poor financial management practices of the past regime.

He assured that the government, under Governor Otti’s leadership, is committed to clearing these arrears without disrupting other sectors of the economy. Payments are expected to commence in July or August, aiming for full settlement by year-end, starting with recent payments for April and May to ABSU workers.
