Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Pate, confirmed this decision, highlighting the committee’s composition from various ministries including Health, Finance, Water Resources, Environment, Youth, Aviation, and Education. Their collective effort aims to support state initiatives in reducing open defecation, crucial in tackling cholera outbreaks.

Dr. Pate emphasized, “The President’s directive underscores the urgency to oversee NCDC’s emergency operations and ensure adequate resources, complemented by state contributions.”

Currently, Nigeria faces a significant cholera crisis, with 1,528 reported cases and 53 deaths across 31 states as of June 24, 2024. Experts warn that the persistence of open defecation poses a severe challenge to achieving sanitation targets set by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2025. This practice not only undermines public health but also exacerbates waterborne diseases like cholera.

Dr. Casmier Ifeanyi, a public health expert, pointed out that inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure contribute to cholera’s prevalence. He stressed the need for improved WASH practices, including better access to clean water and education on the health risks associated with open defecation.

Another specialist, Dr. Isaac Egboja, attributed the cholera outbreaks directly to open defecation, which contaminates water sources during the rainy season, amplifying health risks across affected states.

Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach, focusing on behavioral change, infrastructure development, and rigorous enforcement of sanitation regulations. Nigeria’s commitment to curbing open defecation is crucial for preventing future cholera epidemics and promoting public health nationwide.
