Abuja Primary School Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unresolved Issues....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Teachers in government-owned primary schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commenced an indefinite strike, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Chapter, to the six area councils in the territory.

On Wednesday, September 18, pupils who arrived at their schools were turned away at the gates, as the strike took effect.

The NUT Chairman in Kubwa, Comrade Ameh Baba, confirmed that the decision to strike was finalized after the councils failed to address the union’s demands. He explained that the primary issue is the failure of the area councils to honor their commitment to pay 60% of the outstanding minimum wage arrears owed to teachers.

Comrade Ameh further criticized the councils for not implementing the payment of the 40% peculiar allowance promised to teachers, as well as the failure to execute the 25% and 35% salary increments that were agreed upon.

He emphasized the importance of primary education as the foundation of human development and called for the sector to be given proper attention.

The union has warned that if the government does not respond within seven days, the strike will escalate. Picketing of area council secretariats and solidarity action from secondary school teachers are planned. Comrade Ameh also noted that the strike will delay the release of results for incoming JSS 1 students.
