Human rights lawyer, Barrister Victor Giwa, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, requesting a thorough investigation into an alleged frivolous charge filed against him and another individual. Giwa specifically called for a probe into the roles of the Commissioner of Police (Legal Services), Chiozoba Oyakhire Ehiede, and Ms. Asabe Waziri.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a letter dated May 23, 2025, Giwa urged the IGP to investigate claims of financial inducement behind the decision to prosecute him. He is also seeking clarification on the relationship between Ms. Waziri and CP Ehiede, the withdrawal of the current charge, and a re-examination of Charge No. CR/150/25, IGP v. Victor Giwa & Anor.

According to Giwa, the legal action against him stems from his opposition to alleged falsehoods and his insistence on justice being upheld.

An excerpt from the petition reads:

“I write to report a series of unlawful and illegal acts carried out against me by CP Chiozoba Oyakhire Ehiede and Ms. Asabe Waziri. CP Legal provided unauthorized legal counsel to the IGP in favour of Ms. Waziri, leading to a police operation—led by CSP Maga—that forcefully broke into apartments located at No. 1 Mekong Close, Maitama, Abuja, and handed possession to Ms. Waziri.”

Giwa explained that this incident occurred on June 26, 2024, despite a pending application for stay of execution, an appeal filed at the Court of Appeal (Appeal No: CA/ABJ/CV/246/2022), and a subsisting court order from the High Court in Keffi, Nasarawa State (Suit No. NSD/K70F/2024), all of which had been served on the police and Ms. Waziri.

He further alleged that he was arrested in his capacity as legal counsel to Cecil Osakwe and Abeh Signature Apartment and was forcibly taken to the premises and pressured to open the flats.

“I refused, citing the fact that the matter was still in court, including the Supreme Court and High Court. Nonetheless, on the advice of CP Legal, officers broke into the flats and put Ms. Waziri in possession. She has remained there ever since.”

Giwa claims the CP Legal has misused his office by filing charges against him to suppress dissent and cover up improper actions damaging to the police force’s reputation.

“The charge filed at the FCT High Court (CR/150/25) is intended to harass, embarrass, and silence me. It is baseless, vindictive, and clearly orchestrated to serve the interests of Ms. Waziri through the misuse of police authority.”
