Access Roads To Niger President Mohamed Bazoum’s Residence And Offices Blocked by Elite Presidential Guard

Concerns have arisen as access roads to the residence and offices of Niger President Mohamed Bazoum were reportedly blocked by members of the elite Presidential Guard.

On Wednesday morning, the official home and offices of President Bazoum within the presidential complex in Niamey were sealed off.

A presidential source assured journalists that the President and his family are safe and sound at the residence. Niger, a landlocked West African state, has a history of political instability, experiencing multiple coups and attempted power grabs since gaining independence from France in 1960. President Bazoum was democratically elected in 2021.

Previous coup attempts have occurred in the country, including one in February 2010 that resulted in the overthrow of then-president Mamadou Tandja.

Another attempted coup took place in March 2021, just before Bazoum’s inauguration, leading to several arrests. Additionally, a second bid to oust President Bazoum occurred in March 2023 while he was in Turkey, resulting in an arrest.

The authorities have not publicly commented on some of these incidents. In the past, individuals have been sentenced to jail terms for their involvement in attempted coups against previous leaders in Niger.
