Adeleke Establishes Task Force To Combat Sexual Violence Towards Women

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has initiated the establishment of an action committee aimed at combating sexual violence against women through the utilization of mobile courts. This significant step was announced by Malam Olawale Rasheed, the governor’s spokesperson, in a statement released on Friday in Osogbo.

The statement emphasized that the formation of the committee aligns with the decisions made in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the state government to address sexual violence via mobile courts and other pertinent measures.

During a recent visit to the Minister of Women Affairs in Abuja, the governor reaffirmed his dedication to promptly execute the resolutions put forth by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum for the establishment of mobile courts. These courts will specifically focus on addressing issues of sexual and gender-based violence, as well as child abuse such as street begging. Additionally, they will expedite the trial processes for women and children held in correctional facilities.

Furthermore, the governor has instructed his Commissioner for Justice to draft an executive order aimed at securing the release of all women unjustly detained in the state. The Justice Ministry will compile a comprehensive list of affected women across the state who will be granted executive pardon as part of the ongoing efforts to safeguard women’s rights.

To ensure the effective implementation of the resolutions agreed upon with the Federal Ministry and in alignment with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum’s stance, Governor Adeleke has formed an action committee. The committee comprises key officials including the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon (Mrs) Ayobola Awolowo, the Commissioner for Federal Affairs, Hon (Mrs) Adenike Adeleke, and representation from the Attorney General through the governor’s Special Adviser on Legal Matters, Barrister Nurudeen Kareem Esq.

Additional members include the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon Moshood Olagunju, and the President of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Abisola Ariwodola. The committee’s primary mandate is to implement the resolutions outlined during the joint meeting between the state Governor and the Federal Minister of Women Affairs.
