The clarification came in response to a viral video by Deji Adeyanju, in which the lawyer claimed that the opposition party had been bought over by President Tinubu and the APC. The LP vehemently rejected these claims and demanded an apology from Adeyanju, labeling his statements as criminal defamation.
The party accused Adeyanju of making harmful and false comments about the LP and its leadership, particularly its National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure. The LP called on Adeyanju to provide evidence for his allegations or retract his statements and issue an apology for the damage caused.
“The Labour Party remains the most prominent opposition party in Nigeria today, with our National Chairman, Barrister Abure, being a leading voice critical of the current government,” Ifoh said.
The Labour Party reiterated its commitment to building on its successes from the 2023 elections and continuing its role as a strong critic of the government, while offering alternative solutions for the country’s political challenges.
Ifoh also issued a stern warning to Adeyanju against making further “unguarded and reckless” comments that could harm the party’s reputation. “Adeyanju’s remarks have caused significant harm to the Labour Party, and we demand that he cease any further actions that could tarnish our image,” Ifoh stated. “We consider his comments to be criminal defamation and demand that he either provide proof or apologize to the leadership and millions of Labour Party members.
