ICPC Highlights Importance Of Staff Welfare In Anti-Corruption EffortsThe Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has called for improved welfare for its staff to enhance its anti-corruption efforts. Dr. Aliyu provided a performance update, revealing that between 2023 and 2024, the ICPC received 2,038 petitions, secured 31 convictions, and recovered assets and cash totaling ₦105.82 billion. He detailed that in 2023, the Commission received 1,187 petitions, securing 18 convictions and recovering ₦76.75 billion. In 2024, the number of petitions increased to 851, with 13 convictions and a recovery of ₦29.07 billion.

He emphasized the ICPC’s collaborative efforts with other anti-corruption bodies and relevant agencies both domestically and internationally. On the global stage, Dr. Aliyu highlighted that the Commission led the Nigerian delegation to the Globe Network meeting, securing a position on its steering committee alongside nations such as Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil.

However, Dr. Aliyu stressed that the Commission’s ability to effectively combat corruption is hindered without sufficient budgetary allocation. He called on the National Assembly to advocate for increased funding and legislative reviews of the ICPC Act to better equip the Commission in fulfilling its mandate.

He also raised concerns about overlapping responsibilities between anti-corruption agencies and mentioned that since the enactment of the Proceeds of Crime Act, the ICPC has not been able to access the 2% of recovered assets that the law entitles the Commission to, due to a lack of National Assembly approval.

Addressing the welfare of ICPC staff, Dr. Aliyu urged lawmakers to consider the well-being of those on the frontlines of the anti-corruption fight. “You cannot fight corruption effectively when those tasked with enforcing it are struggling to take care of their families; it is a risk to the Commission,” he said.

In response, Prince Kayode Akiolu commended the ICPC’s efforts and congratulated the Chairman on his international recognition. He noted that the purpose of the visit was to support the strategic planning for the 2025 budget, emphasizing the importance of prevention in the fight against corruption, as the ICPC’s awareness campaigns have made a significant impact.

As part of their oversight role, the Committee also planned to review conditions at the ICPC’s detention facilities, including the length of time suspects are held before being arraigned in court and the living conditions of detainees.
