Adeyanju Explodes: ‘Police Tortured Sowore — IGP Egbetokun Will Face Justice

Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has refuted the Nigeria Police Force’s claim that Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), was not tortured during his detention.

The Police, in an earlier statement, said they were compelled to correct what they described as a wave of disinformation surrounding Sowore’s “lawful” arrest and detention.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Muyiwa Adejobi, accused Sowore of manipulating public narratives and weaponizing propaganda to discredit state institutions, particularly targeting the office of the Inspector-General of Police.

Adejobi maintained that Sowore’s arrest was based on credible and corroborated allegations, including forgery, cyberstalking, and other offences currently under investigation. He insisted that the arrest followed all legal provisions, constitutional safeguards, due process, and respect for the suspect’s rights.

According to him, Sowore was released on bail well within the 48-hour constitutional limit, as provided under Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He added that Sowore had been fully informed of the allegations against him and would soon appear before a competent court to face the charges in a transparent judicial process.

Reacting via his official Facebook page, Adeyanju accused the police of lying and described Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun as “the most useless” in the history of the Nigeria Police Force.

“You are a liar,” Adeyanju wrote. “The Nigeria Police, led by the illegal IGP Egbetokun, the most useless IG in the history of the NPF, tortured Sowore and broke his hands. And you will all pay for your crimes.”
