Adeyanju Issues Fresh Demand To INEC, Calls For Immediate Compliance With Supreme Court Ruling

Human rights lawyer and political commentator, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately implement the recent Supreme Court judgment restoring key provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

The Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision by a seven-member panel, restored Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2) of the Electoral Act after the provisions had earlier been voided by the Court of Appeal. The sections relate to political party membership registers and the nomination of candidates for elective positions.

Reacting to the judgment, Adeyanju urged INEC to take the necessary administrative steps to give full effect to the decision of the apex court.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Adeyanju specifically called on the electoral commission to remove from its official portal the names of candidates affected by the judgment, arguing that INEC is constitutionally required to comply with decisions of the Supreme Court.

He referenced Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which provides for the enforcement of judgments and decisions of the Supreme Court by authorities and persons within Nigeria.

Adeyanju therefore urged INEC not to delay the implementation of the judgment, stressing that the commission’s official records should reflect the consequences of the court’s decision.

He also called on the electoral body to undertake all necessary administrative measures to ensure that the judgment is fully implemented.

The lawyer maintained that INEC’s response should be guided by the constitutional requirement to give effect to Supreme Court decisions, particularly as political parties and their candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections.

Adeyanju further urged the commission to act promptly and ensure that its official portal and other relevant records are updated in line with the judgment.
