In a press statement issued on Thursday by Sylvester Agih, Legal Associate of Citizens Gavel, the organization criticized the compensation offered to each of the 347 families, stating that it was grossly inadequate.
The statement expressed serious concerns regarding the government’s commitment to providing sufficient housing for its citizens, including police personnel.
“CITIZENS GAVEL expresses deep concerns regarding the recent demolition of the police barracks at Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. This action raises significant apprehensions about the government’s commitment to providing adequate housing for its citizens and the dedicated personnel of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read.
In July 2024, the Nigeria Police Force announced it would provide N2 million to each of the approximately 347 families residing in the barracks to assist with their relocation due to a purported redevelopment plan. However, Citizens Gavel argued that this amount is insufficient given the rising cost of living in Nigeria, which has significantly increased housing prices and living expenses, especially in Lagos.
The organization expressed its disappointment with the N2 million compensation, stating it does not adequately address the financial burdens these families will face in securing housing in an area with high rental costs. Furthermore, they warned that such inadequate compensation could lead to increased instances of extortion among police officers as they struggle to meet their rental obligations, potentially affecting their ability to perform their duties effectively.
Citizens Gavel emphasized the need for the government to provide a more substantial financial package that reflects current economic realities and housing market conditions.
The group’s recommendations included:
1.Housing Assistance Programs: Establish comprehensive housing assistance programs for police personnel to ensure access to affordable housing options.
2.Proper Planning and Consultation: Prior to any future demolition or redevelopment projects, the government should engage in thorough planning and consultation with all stakeholders, including affected families and the police force, to ensure their needs are adequately met.
3.Support Services: Implement support services to assist affected families and police officers during their transition to new housing, including counseling and financial advice.
The organization stressed that it is imperative for the government to prioritize the welfare of its citizens and personnel, particularly in critical areas such as housing. They urged authorities to rectify this situation promptly and ensure that such oversights do not happen in the future.
