Cardiologists are advising individuals with pre-existing heart conditions and those emotionally connected to football to refrain from getting overly engaged during the game and to take breaks when necessary.
This cautionary advice follows the recent tragic deaths of four Nigerians after watching the Nigeria – South Africa semi-final match last Wednesday.
According to experts, individuals in these categories are susceptible to heightened emotions that can potentially trigger a heart attack. The sudden deaths during a soccer match were attributed to either heart attacks or strokes.
The experts explained that some individuals may have a genetic predisposition that puts them at risk of experiencing a heart attack during moments of intense emotional arousal.
In a statement to Sunday Vanguard, Prof Augustine Odili, President of the Nigerian Cardiac Society (NCS), suggested that the deaths may have been caused by acute triggers of myocardial infarction (heart attack) due to heightened emotions.
He emphasized the importance of avoiding intense emotional involvement in events like football matches for those aware of their strong emotional attachment to such activities.
