The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has once more announced the postponement of the commencement of the second phase of the 2023-2024 league season…..CONTINUE READING

Initially slated to kick off in January, the second phase was rescheduled for February 14 due to the ongoing 2023 AFCON, set to conclude on Sunday, February 11.

Given the national focus on the Super Eagles’ advancement to the final match, drawing attention to Ivory Coast, the hosting nation, the league’s operations have been impacted.

Nigeria’s participation in the 2023 AFCON final against the hosts, following their earlier group stage victory over Ivory Coast on January 18, further heightens the national interest in the tournament.

Consequently, the NPFL’s second phase, originally slated to start from matchday 20, has been deferred from February 14 to February 16, 2024. This decision was communicated to all participating NPFL clubs via a letter from the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi.

Explaining the rationale behind the delay, Owumi cited the necessity to accommodate outstanding games before resuming the league in full swing.

The official communication read, “This is to formally notify all clubs that the new date for the Matchday 20, initially scheduled for February 14, 2024, is now the weekend of Friday, February 16, 2024, to Sunday, February 18, 2024.”

However, despite the postponement, the outstanding NPFL Matchday 15 fixture between Rivers United and Shooting Stars of Ibadan is set to proceed at the Lekan Salami Stadium today, February 10, at 4 p.m.

As things stand, Lobi Stars lead the league table with 36 points from 19 games, holding a one-point advantage over second-placed Remo Stars.
