Speaking at the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Tinubu emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity in addressing the continent’s challenges. He highlighted the hindrances to Africa’s growth, citing issues like climate change and unfair global trade patterns, as well as internal challenges such as coup-birthed autocracies and constitutional tenure tinkering.
Tinubu called for a renewed focus on qualitative democratic governance and economic development while addressing obstacles that hinder progress. He urged African nations to overcome disagreements over unconstitutional changes of government and emphasized the need for a united West Africa.
The President also discussed the importance of education in finding creative solutions to Africa’s challenges. He underscored the significance of African education, not only in science and technology but also in democratic practice, diplomacy, and conflict resolution without violence. Tinubu highlighted his administration’s efforts in Nigeria, including school feeding programs, curriculum redesign, and ICT initiatives to prepare youths for the 21st-century global economy.
Furthermore, Tinubu extended an invitation to the Africa Counter-Terrorism Summit in Abuja in April 2024, aiming to address the root causes of violent extremism beyond military and law enforcement measures, including poverty, inadequate political access, and the spread of hateful ideologies.
