Captain Wasuku Alushi, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State, emphasized that the deployment of the Nigerian Navy helicopter aims to enhance surveillance capabilities and gather crucial information for combating crimes within the designated areas.

The helicopter’s primary role is to extend the line of sight of surface assets by conducting over-the-horizon targeting and relaying valuable information to ground forces. Captain Alushi highlighted that the helicopter would remain in the region until substantial progress is achieved in addressing kidnapping and sea robbery concerns.

Captain Alushi identified specific focus areas, including Araromi Waterside, Aberike, Idiogba, Awoye, Skelewu, and Ese-Odo local government area, particularly Safa-Arogbo and Agagba. He mentioned recent successes in dismantling a large illegal refining site at Araromi Sea-Side, leading to the crackdown on oil thieves and an improvement in crude oil production.

Despite achievements in curbing crude oil theft and illegal bunkering, Captain Alushi acknowledged a shift in criminal tactics towards kidnapping and sea robbery. In response, Rear Admiral Mustapha Bala Hassan, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, directed a renewed operation under the overarching mandate of Operation Delta Sanity to address the rising incidents in the FOB Igbokoda area.

Captain Alushi cited a recent waterway crime between Idiogba and Awoye, where a petrol station attendant was kidnapped, prompting a swift response from the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base. Subsequent operations led to the arrest of a key suspect near Abereke, with incriminating evidence in his possession.

The suspect has been handed over to relevant security agencies for further investigation, yielding valuable revelations to aid in planning future operations. Captain Alushi reassured ongoing efforts to track the kidnappers and secure the release of the abducted petrol attendant.

In alignment with the broader objectives of Operation Delta Sanity, launched by Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Emmanuel Uchechukwu Ogala seven weeks ago, the Nigerian Navy is committed to sanitizing the maritime domain, particularly the Niger Delta, from all forms of maritime-related crimes. The deployment of the helicopter, equipped with pictorial intelligence and other strategic assets, underscores the determination to combat criminal elements and ensure maritime security.
