Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the President of AfDB, underscored the significance of this move, stating that it exemplifies shareholders’ trust in the bank’s capacity to utilize resources effectively and mobilize additional capital. With the approved capital increase, the AfDB’s authorized general capital will escalate from $201 billion to $318 billion, augmenting liquidity and facilitating expanded operations.

Adesina emphasized the pivotal role of these resources in upholding the bank’s triple-A rating under diverse circumstances. Expressing gratitude for shareholders’ confidence, he underscored the imperative of adequately equipping the AfDB to propel Africa towards transformation.

During deliberations with the board, Adesina outlined the bank’s strategic focus on bolstering private sector initiatives, enhancing infrastructure, addressing climate change, and providing concessional financing, particularly for women and youth empowerment. However, he cautioned about potential challenges posed by unforeseen shocks, emphasizing the necessity of robust mitigation measures.
