Ajayi Kadri, the Director-General of the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria, affirmed the organization’s backing of the federal government’s proposed ₦60,000 minimum wage during a recent interview. He cited microeconomic, infrastructure, and security challenges as key constraints affecting the private sector, asserting that surpassing the government’s proposed minimum wage is currently unattainable.
Kadri emphasized that ongoing negotiations among the government, private sector, and labor unions primarily focus on establishing a minimum wage rather than a living wage, reflecting the lowest feasible payment for workers in the country.
He underscored the economic difficulties confronting both labor and private businesses, making it increasingly challenging to meet labor unions’ wage demands. Kadri highlighted the global economic uncertainties and necessary government reforms contributing to the complex negotiation landscape.
Kadri acknowledged the proposal of a ₦419,000 living wage but highlighted significant hurdles faced by the government and private sector in meeting this demand. He pointed to economic constraints, inflationary pressures, and a challenging operating environment as factors impeding the feasibility of such a high wage.
While recognizing the pressure on labor to advocate for higher wages amidst soaring inflation rates, Kadri urged all parties to collaborate in strengthening the economy rather than resorting to strike action. He cautioned against jeopardizing economic stability, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to foster growth and address shared challenges.
Expressing regret over the decision of labor unions to initiate a nationwide strike, Kadri urged reconsideration, urging them to engage constructively in ongoing negotiations. He emphasized the importance of government leadership, fiscal prudence, and dialogue in navigating the current economic landscape.
In response to labor unions’ strike announcement following the government’s rejection of a higher minimum wage, Kadri urged restraint, highlighting the imperative of continued engagement and collaboration to resolve the wage dispute
