President Trump signed an executive order formalizing the withdrawal shortly after his inauguration, sparking global concern.

In a statement on Tuesday, AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed dismay over the decision, emphasizing the critical role the U.S. has played in shaping WHO’s global health policies over the past seven decades.

“The USA, as a WHO member, has been instrumental in establishing global public health instruments and norms. In Africa, the U.S. was a strong supporter of the Africa CDC, which collaborates with WHO to detect, prepare for, respond to, and recover from pandemics,” Mahamat said.

He underscored the importance of WHO in ensuring global public health security, calling it a shared responsibility for all nations.

Mahamat expressed hope that the U.S. government would reconsider its withdrawal from the WHO, an organization it helped establish and has supported extensively in the fight against global health emergencies.
