Telecom Operators Address Concerns Over Looming Tariff Increase In Nigeria
Telecommunications companies in Nigeria have announced plans to implement a 50% increase in call, data, and other service tariffs in the near future.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Chairman of the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Gbenga Adebayo, revealed this in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.
Adebayo explained that telcos are currently meeting all regulatory requirements necessary to roll out the new tariff structure. While he did not specify an exact implementation date, he indicated that the hike would take effect once operators like MTN, Airtel, and Glo complete the required regulatory processes.
“The 50% tariff increase will be implemented soon. We are in the process of meeting the regulatory requirements for this adjustment. Once these steps are concluded, operators will begin applying the new rates.
“I can’t confirm whether it will be in February 2025 or earlier, but the increase will take effect once the necessary processes are finalized,” Adebayo stated.
This update follows the recent approval of the 50% tariff hike by the Nigerian government through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
While the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has attributed the increase to rising inflation, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and subscribers have criticized the move, warning that it will exacerbate the hardship faced by Nigerians.
